Education That Builds Futures: Pablo, Esther, and Wewa's Stories of Change

Discover how education is transforming lives in Guatemala and Kenya, empowering individuals to achieve their dreams and give back to their communities.

Education That Inspires Change

Education unlocks opportunity across the globe. It gives people the skills to support their families, strengthen communities, and build brighter futures. When one person gains access to education, the impact often extends far beyond the individual — creating a ripple effect that strengthens entire communities.

In Guatemala and Kenya, CHOICE Humanitarian’s programs are helping individuals like Pablo, Esther, and Wewa achieve their dreams while inspiring positive change in their communities.

A Dream Within Reach for Pablo

Pablo May's study notebookIn the rural community of Rinconcito del Norte, Pablo serves his local church congregation. Together with his family, he is overcoming the challenges that come with living in an impoverished area. He was unable to attend school as a child, leaving him without the education required to pursue his desired role as a pastor. He dreams of finishing his studies at the primary level. With CHOICE’s involvement, those dreams now have a chance.

In recent years, Pablo has been studying at the National Institute of Radio Education (IGER). CHOICE Humanitarian works with IGER as a collaborative partner to bring educational opportunities to underserved community members. Pablo shared that he is grateful for the teachers who have always been there to guide him in his activities and exercises.

“I’m very grateful to CHOICE for giving me the opportunity to change my life.”

How Esther and Wewa Are Giving Back

Esther and Wewa, two CHOICE scholarship recipients, have experienced firsthand how education is a powerful tool to break cycles of poverty — work that CHOICE invests in through multiple pathways designed to expand opportunity and strengthen community leadership.

Full Scholarship Program
In 2024, CHOICE provided full scholarships to 16 gifted students in Kenya, expanding access to education for those who might otherwise be unable to continue their studies. Through the Community-Based Trust Fund Program (COBETF) — a collaborative initiative led by CHOICE, local organizations, and development partners — 75 students received additional support in 2024.

Former scholarship recipients Esther and Wewa now give back to their communities by hosting educational clinics and tutoring sessions during holidays. Their mission is to pay it forward and inspire the next generation of scholars. Wewa reflects, "It's important to raise children well so that, when they succeed in life, they can return to their community and give back."

Esther shares the same hope for the students she mentors. "My aim is to encourage learners from my community to believe that they can succeed, regardless of the resources available to them."
