More Than Just Donations: Campbell Companies’ Corporate Spirit of Giving Award

It’s an honor for CHOICE Humanitarian to work with individuals and organizations who have proven that their dedication to reducing poverty matches CHOICE’s. One such example is Campbell Companies. Because of the work it has done to assist CHOICE’s mission for over a decade, Campbell Companies was nominated by CHOICE Humanitarian and won the Corporate Spirit of Giving Award at the 2022 Utah Philanthropy Day Awards last fall.

This award recognizes a for-profit business that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to philanthropy with direct financial support, leadership involvement, volunteer participation, and commitment to its workforce. In its interactions with CHOICE Humanitarian, Campbell Companies has time and again proven worthy of this award.

Campbell Companies: A Commitment to Stewardship

Campbell Companies is a locally owned business that sells, rents, and supports heavy equipment and accompanying technology solutions. Campbell Companies has been a staple in Utah for years and is the parent company for entities like Wheeler Machinery Co. and Diamond Rental. Campbell Companies’ mission is stated as ‘supporting the ones who build our world’, and, true to this sentiment, it has been helping CHOICE Humanitarian build a better world for the future.

Outside of its work with CHOICE Humanitarian, Campbell Companies has been named a “Best Company to Work” by Utah Business Magazine, recognizing the company as a leader in employee satisfaction. Campbell Companies regularly participates in a variety of beautification projects and quality-of-life improvement efforts in their local communities.

Getting to Work

Throughout this partnership with CHOICE, which began in the summer of 2012, Campbell Companies has donated significant funds to help people in need. They have also sent numerous employees on company-funded humanitarian expeditions to rural communities with which CHOICE works.

“It’s been really rewarding to see the friendships and relationships that have come about within the company as a result of these expeditions," said Campbell Companies’ Executive Vice President, Jonathan Campbell. “It’s built relationships internally that we never would have had otherwise.”

Marketing Director Andrea Young also shared this about Campbell Companies’ philanthropy: “We really leverage the products we offer.” In addition to using company technology and construction solutions in CHOICE field projects, the company funds have been matched by The Caterpillar Foundation which will meet Cat dealer donations up to $100,000 annually for environmental and sustainability conservation projects.

A New Partnership

While Campbell Companies had been a partner since 2012, CHOICE Humanitarian was thrilled when the organization proposed a partnership with CHOICE as its flagship charity, focusing on Navajo Nation. This partnership’s goal is to reduce global poverty by breaking down the barriers that prevent indigenous Navajo people from attaining economic development and self-reliance, as well as addressing food insecurity in the region.

The Navajo Nation is a food desert with only 13 grocery stores in an area covering 27,000 square miles and home to over 300,000 residents. Nearly 60% of the people living in this area lack both electricity and potable water, barely 24% of housing is deemed safe, and unemployment hovers near 40%. Campbell Companies is dedicated to addressing two overlapping and critical needs: a lack of available, affordable, nutritious food; and a lack of income generation and employment opportunities.

Without organizations like Campbell Companies, CHOICE Humanitarian would be unable to continue in its mission to build paths out of poverty for those living in rural communities. Jen Dyer, Director of Community and Corporate Impact for CHOICE, had this to say about Campbell Companies: “CHOICE Humanitarian relies 100% on donations. Without the support of partners like Campbell Companies, we literally would not exist.”

The bonds that have been formed—not just between Campbell Companies and CHOICE, but among the individuals who make up this partnership—go deeper than philanthropy. As Jonathan Campbell said when accepting the Corporate Spirit of Giving Award, “The honor really rests with our employees.”

CHOICE Humanitarian is proud to call Campbell Companies a valued Corporate Partner.
